In Holland we have a saying: A dog has a boss, but a cat has servants.
You don't have to take that literally, but there is a little truth on there.
A cat acts as he pleases!
Of course you can teach a cat what is and what isn't allowed,
but putting a cat on your lap when he doesn't want it at that time, forget it!
The N.F.C. is a very affectionate and intelligent cat, he loves stroking and playing,
but needs his privacy too, now and than.
They are excellent climbers, therefor they do appreciate a climbing-pole
which at the same time is a perfect place to scratch their nails,
instead of using your furniture for that purpose.
Their coat is half long and needs little taking care of.
During summer they normally loose their undercoat, but they keep their fool tail
and wisps on their ears.
The N.F.C is originally a Scandinavian cat and to survive the cold winter they
are equipped with an undercoat which obviously they can do without in the summer.
The topcoat is also water-resistant.
Since they now are kept as pets, they do not necessarily loose their undercoat during summer.
If during winter we take our central heating into consideration,
things could easily turn the other way around.
A N.F.C is firmly build, females of course somewhat smaller than males.
They have a fair tall body and their front-paws are a trifle shorter than their hind-paws.
Tiny wisps of hair grow between their toes.
When the Norwegian is in 'winter coat' they have a double coat with a full collar
and long hair on his hind-paws (knickerbockers).
The eyes: Are big, somewhat oval and oblique.
The ears: Long hairs grow out of his ears with sometimes small wisps on top.
As mentioned before, his coat needs little taking care of, but it's advisable
to use a comb while he's loosing his 'winter coat', this to prevent
extangelation and excessive vormiting of hairballs.
Although this is of course a brief explanation, we hope we have informed you enough
to give you a pretty good idea about the character and
appearance of the Norwegian Forest Cat.
